Women’s participation in mathematics in Scotland, 1730–1850

چکیده

The eighteenth century saw a flourishing of scientific and philosophical thought throughout Scotland, known as the Scottish Enlightenment. accomplishments prominent male figures this period have been well documented in all disciplines. However, studies women’s experiences are relatively sparse. This paper partially corrects oversight by drawing together evidence for participation mathematics Scotland between 1730 1850. In considering women across social classes, it argues broad definition ‘mathematics’ that includes arithmetic astronomy, assesses opportunities engagement under three headings: education, family, sociability. It concludes certain elements Enlightenment culture promoted wider mathematical activities than has previously recognized, but such continued to be circumscribed societal views role within family formation.
